Hi, I’m Maya.

I photograph places people walk past. I climb, build small mechanical creatures out of fabrication scraps, and sometimes take apart things that were working perfectly well. I like finding out what happens when there isn’t an assignment. My story begins in Madrid in 2065.

Growing up inside the future

In the world of the Journal of the Universe, I’m sixteen, living with my family in the Center and attending Abstract Preparatory School. Responsive buildings, autonomous transport, and classrooms that adapt to you have always been part of my life. For a long time, I barely noticed them. When your surroundings are designed to make things possible, it’s easy to mistake that support for something you did entirely yourself. I’m beginning to look more closely at what makes my freedom possible, and why the same city offers other people so much less of it.

Looking beyond the assignment

School gives me access to extraordinary things. It also has a habit of deciding what an experience should teach me before I’ve had it. I want to discover something that wasn’t prepared for me. Sometimes that means exploring an old façade or a forgotten corridor. Sometimes it means making something with no obvious purpose, or asking one more question when everyone else is ready to leave. Through an Abstract Prep immersion program with the Design Engineers Club, my world brushes against Elena’s. We come from different versions of the same city. That difference gives me something to notice about the life I’ve taken for granted.
